Salon Products vs. Drug Store: What is the difference?

Dee'Anna

Okay, so price is the most obvious difference between salon products versus drug store products. I'm sure you have already heard, "The ingredients are better in salon products and that is why they cost more." Also I would be willing to bet that you have probably tried a drug store shampoo that you felt worked better than a salon product. I know, I have been there! I totally didn't understand why it mattered as long as my hair felt good. The silky hair I was feeling was a lie! Let me explain:

1. Additives! Silicone in particular, coats the hair kind of like wax, making it appear shiny and silky. Although things appear great on the outside the reality is your hair is suffering on the inside. The silicone coating prevents nutrients and moisture from penetrating the hair, eventually leaving the hair dry, dull, and frizzy.

2. pH! Acidic is low, Alkaline is high, and 7 is neutral. The pH of hair is between 4.5 and 5.5 putting it on the acidic side of the pH scale. Products that feel like they are giving you a deep clean often have high amounts of sulfates and a high pH level, more towards alkaline. Lightener and haircolor are alkaline. Alkalinity opens the cuticle, which is needed for a color service, but is extremely damaging when done multiple times a week. Salon products tend to be closer to the acidic side of the pH scale. Our natural acidity level prevents fungi and bacteria on the scalp, and keeps your cuticle closed and healthy. This is why vinegar (acidic) rinses are so popular for scalp and hair treatments.

3. Concentration! Salon products are concentrated, meaning they have not been diluted down with a lot of water. When a product is concentrated less is needed per use. You shouldn't have to use more than a quarter size amount of product. Using less of the product means you get more uses out of it, which helps balance the price difference.

4. Quality! As a hairstylist my biggest concern for my clients is health. I want to keep your hair healthy, but even more than that I want to make sure I am not putting toxic ingredients on you. The quality of ingredients in drug store products are often purchased based on what is most affordable for the company. I prefer to support brands that are willing to go the extra mile by using ingredients that are safe. While shopping you can look at the back of a product and google " is (insert ingredient) safe" and make your decision from there.

(I can not speak on behalf of all salon or drug store products, but I know the information to be true when compared to all-nutrient)
