Which shampoo is right for you?

Dee'Anna

"What shampoo should I get?"

It's the classic question you find yourself asking your stylist, your bestie, and google of course! There are millions of options on the market. Your shampoo/conditioner set the stage for the rest of your hair care routine, so knowing what will work for your hair is pretty important. I've curated a step by step guide on what factors to consider when making your purchase!

Step One: Determine Your Hair Type

Knowing if your hair is fine, medium, or coarse is key when selecting your products. Fine, medium, and coarse are hair types based on the diameter and texture of your hair strand, not the amount of hair you have.

Fine Hair has the smallest diameter and often can be limp, although very soft. Sometimes those whose have a lot of fine hair will describe their hair as thick, and accidentally purchase products for coarse hair. Fine hair can range from very thin to very dense. You will want a shampoo and conditioner that is light weight.

I recommend the all-nutrient volumize shampoo and conditioner for fine hair. It is lightweight, provides a good clean feeling, and smells like raspberries!

Medium Hair is not considered fine or course. If you have medium hair you likely have been told your hair is easy to work with. This is because your strands have style memory. Medium hair types have the most freedom when choosing their shampoo and conditioner, but will need to consider your hair's history and current condition.

I recommend the restore shampoo and conditioner as an everyday product. It is infused with vitamins and amino acids to keep the hair healthy and shiny.

Coarse Hair has the largest diameter of each hair strand. Its often unruly and said to "have a mind of it own" as it is more prone to frizz. Typically, course hair responds to heavier shampoo and conditioner.

I recommend the smooth shampoo as it is designed to fight frizz and protect hair from humitidy.

Also Joico has moisture mask that is amazing for coarse hair that is dry.

Step Two: Coloring and Chemical Services

Now that you know your hair type, let's talk about your hair's history! The history of your hair plays a huge role in deterimining what type of products it needs, specifically when you go blonder, have a vivid color, or if you have had a smoothing treatment done.

For salon created blondes, no matter your hair type you'll want to be sure you have a purple shampoo and conditioner in the mix that can be alternated with with your everyday shampoo.

I recommend the cool violet by all-nutrient or a custom tinted Olaplex for my blondes. Shimmer lights is a popular purple shampoo, but be careful because it contains sulfates and a heavy dye load which can turn your hair purple.

If you have a vivid color, I can customize a tint of color to add to your shampoo to increase longevity.

No matter what your color or texture is it is important to avoid sulfates, especially if you have received a smoothing treatment. After shampooing just 7 times with a system containing sulfates your smoothing treatment will be completely stripped from your hair.

Step Three: Current Condition

If you have fragile hair, have had drastic color changes, or gone really light with your color your hair needs some extra tlc.

My all time favorite, Olaplex! It has a patented formula proven to rebuild broken bonds in the hair. The shampoo gets your hair clean and the conditioner provides so much moisture without weighing the hair down.

The #3 is a treatment is for repairing damage and the #6 (not pictured) is the best leave-in conditioner/styling cream I have ever used. It provides moisture and reduces frizz without being too heavy!

Healthy hair is the best hair! Regardless of where you decide to get your products please check the ingredient labels on the back to avoid sulfates, selenium sulfide (which has been linked to premature balding), and parabens.

If you would like to try one of my products before you buy, I am happy to send you home with a sample!
